Roots That Reach Deep – 5-Day Devotional

CC FAM,

This year, God has made it clear that our word for 2026 is DEEPER. The call is simple: to continually grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus.

Over the next five days, I want to invite you to join me on a devotional journey called Roots That Reach Deep. Together, we'll explore what it means to be firmly rooted in Christ, growing beneath the surface so we can remain strong, fruitful, and faithful in every season.

My prayer is that these devotions will help you slow down, meet with God, and deepen your desire for Him.

As Jeremiah 17 reminds us, those who are planted by God's living water will continue to thrive, even in difficult seasons.

Let's grow deeper together.

Pastor SC

Day 1: The Source Beneath the Surface

Reading: Jeremiah 17:5-8

Devotional: Like trees planted by water, our spiritual vitality depends entirely on our source. The imagery in Jeremiah reveals a profound truth: what sustains us beneath the surface determines what we produce above ground. Many of us maintain impressive outer lives while our inner lives remain disconnected from the Living Water. Today, examine where you've truly planted your life. Are your roots reaching toward Christ, or are you drawing from shallow cisterns of self-reliance? The difference isn't just about surviving spiritual drought—it's about thriving through every season. God invites you to sink your roots deeper into His presence, where the water never runs dry and your leaves stay perpetually green.

Day 2: Desire Over Passion

Reading: John 7:37-39

Devotional: Jesus stood among a crowd surrounded by abundance and declared, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink." This wasn't about physical thirst—it was about soul-deep desire. Passion ebbs and flows with circumstances, but desire dwells in your core. It's the engine of your soul that remains constant through every storm. Consider this: What if your spiritual inconsistency isn't a passion problem but a desire problem? When desire for Christ grows, passion naturally follows. Today, ask God to cultivate genuine thirst for Him—not just emotional highs, but a deep, unshakeable longing that draws you to His presence regardless of how you feel. True spiritual formation begins when we touch our desire and allow it to lead us heavenward.

Day 3: The Power of Community Roots

Reading: Hebrews 10:24-25

Devotional: Tree roots don't grow in isolation—they intertwine underground, creating strength through connection. Similarly, God never designed your spiritual formation to happen alone. The excuse "I don't have time for community" may actually mean "I don't have time for spiritual formation." We need each other to spur one another toward love and good deeds. Isolation weakens our roots; community strengthens them. The deep work of Christ happens best when our lives are connected to others who challenge, encourage, and support us. Today, honestly evaluate your level of spiritual community. Are you trying to grow alone? Consider one practical step toward authentic connection—joining a small group, reaching out to a fellow believer, or simply being vulnerable with someone about your spiritual journey.

Day 4: Fruit Cannot Be Forced

Reading: 1 Timothy 4:7-8; Galatians 5:22-23

Devotional: Spiritual growth isn't about trying harder—it's about training differently. Paul instructed Timothy to "train yourself for godliness," recognizing that Christlikeness doesn't happen accidentally or instantly. Fruit cannot be forced; it must be formed in us through intentional practices over time. We often focus on producing spiritual fruit while neglecting the root system that makes fruit possible. What if shallow roots simply produce shallow fruit? The spiritual disciplines—prayer, Scripture reading, fasting, solitude, worship—aren't religious obligations but training exercises that develop healthy roots. Today, shift your focus from the fruit you wish you had to the roots you're cultivating. Choose one spiritual practice to engage consistently this week, trusting that healthy roots will inevitably produce healthy fruit in God's timing.

Day 5: Deep Formation Leads to Mission

Reading: Matthew 28:18-20; John 15:16

Devotional: The tree in Jeremiah "never stops producing fruit"—and that fruit is never just for the tree itself. Deep spiritual formation always leads to mission. The same gospel that saved you is meant to flow through you to others. Spiritual obesity occurs when we consume endless spiritual nourishment but never give it away. God isn't calling us to be loud and shallow, but deep and fruitful—rooted so firmly in Christ that we bear fruit in every season, not just when it's easy. The fruit God produces in you is for your family, neighbors, friends, city, and world. Today, ask yourself: Who needs to see the evidence of Christ in me? How is my spiritual growth benefiting others? Let your deep roots produce fruit that feeds a hungry world, reflecting the heart of Jesus who gave everything for others.

Closing Reflection: As you complete this devotional journey, remember that the deepest spiritual season of your life can begin today. Stay the course. Let your desire for God grow. Sink your roots deep into the water of His presence, knowing that when heat and drought come, you'll remain green and fruitful…for His glory, your abundance, and the sake of the world.
